Join Karing Frontiers in the mission of securing the right of education among refugee and migrant youth on the Thai-Myanmar border! This year, Karing Frontiers is aiming to raise 39,000 USD (302,000 HKD) to empower 534 students and 60 teaching staff among five different post-secondary schools located in refugee camps. $72 USD ($560 HKD) is all it takes to sponsor one student for a whole academic year. For every ticket you purchase, your name will be entered into the raffle, where you will have the chance to win prizes which include artwork exhibited at the Hong Kong Human Rights Art Prize, portraits of the Chin and Kayan people by award-winning photographer Jo Farrell, and more. To enter the raffle, make a donation of at least 72 USD ($560 HKD).
HIGHER EDUCATION ON THE THAI-MYANMAR BORDER
Since 1949, Myanmar has been swept by what is still the world’s longest ongoing civil war, displacing millions of indigenous peoples. Today, about 150,000 refugees (ethnic groups including the Karen, Karenni, Chin, Kachin, and Shan) are still in the refugee camps since their establishment 36 years ago.
In spite of political unrest, refugee camp community leaders, teachers, parents, and youth have pushed for the continuation of education as a source of stability, hope, and as a long term investment towards a better future. The Karen Refugee Committee Education Entity (KRCEE) has been actively involved in refugee education, especially at the postsecondary level. Karing Frontiers is working in collaboration with the KRCEE to provide financial support for five higher education institutions among five refugee camps on the Thai-Myanmar border. These include: The Northern Karen Junior College (NKJC), the Pu Taw Memorial Junior College (PTMJC), the Kaw Lah Junior College (KLJC), the Tanawthari Junior College (TJC), and the Mae Ra Moe Junior College (MRMJC). Over the last 13 years, there have been 2,665 graduates. Through their education, these refugee and migrant youth are empowered with the skills they need to make a difference within their community.
