The mission of Kern Literacy Council is to empower individuals to improve their quality of life through literacy education. Volunteers provide 20,000 hours of free one-to-one and small group tutoring each year. Staff members deliver workshops and books to thousands more parents and children.
Leaders for Literacy is a new giving group that provides funding for books and supplies to support our students, families, and tutors. Membership in Leaders for Literacy starts at $500 annually, the cost to provide services to one student for one year.
Your gift supports students like Tyrone, a student at Bakersfield Adult School, who needed a little extra help in math. He rode his bike from the Adult School to KLC twice a week to work with his tutor. Although his original goal was to pass the GED, in the end, he was able to earn a traditional high school diploma and enroll at BC. Another student signed up to work on her English as a Second Language. Later she shared she would really like to obtain her US citizenship and needed help passing the oral section. After only two months, she passed her test and will be sworn in as a new US citizen in 2018.
In addition to knowing you have helped transform lives, Leaders for Literacy donors will be listed in our event programs and on our website. A Leaders for Literacy lapel pin and invitations to other special events are also included. All gifts qualify for a full charitable tax deduction. Each $500 gift supports one student for a year.
Like many nonprofit organizations, our budget has been hit hard by the downturn in the local economy. This year more than ever we would appreciate your support.
