The Book of Del: A Biography of Homelessness

This is a non-fiction book consisting of scenes in the life of Del Seymour, a 69-year-old man who was homeless for 18 years, mostly in San Francisco's Tenderloin. Although my focus is homelessness, in Del's case, he was not only homeless, but a crack addict, dealer, pimp, and also a Vietnam War medic, a union electrician and skilled plumber. The book is based on more than a year of lengthy interviews with Del, as well as with others in his life, including two adult daughters, a colleague in Del's Tenderloin Walking Tours (once homeless herself), the head of philanthropy at Twitter, who supports Del's work on behalf of disenfranchised and often homeless people through his organization Code Tenderloin, a man he calls his "sobriety buddy," the former head of the Mayor's Commission on Homelessness, of which Del is now a co-chair, and the head of the Gubbio Project, which offers homeless San Franciscans a place to rest during the day.
