Vital Arts

Soaring rents and costs are displacing artists and forcing them to hold music events in deathtraps like the Ghost Ship, threatening the continuation of innovative arts and culture in the Bay Area, long recognized as a fertile place for creativity. Along with friends Beth Jay and Tom Dolan, Edwin Bernbaum, whose son Jonathan died in the Ghost Ship fire, started Vital Arts to address this problem and honor him and the other victims by providing safe, affordable housing, work, and performance spaces for artists and musicians. Vital Arts rests on the premise that groundbreaking arts and culture are essential to the vitality and health of society at large.
