About Support Art x Science x Social Change in 2023!
Fulcrum Arts champions creative and critical thinkers working at the intersection of art and science through special projects, exhibitions, and unique opportunities for artists, as well as by providing assistance for fellow creative community-based organizations.
Your gift to Fulcrum has exponential impact. By contributing to our end-of-year campaign, you will support Fulcrum’s diverse program and ability to serve more than 80 additional artists and art-based collectives across Greater Los Angeles.
A banner year, 2022 saw our commitment to the convergence of art and science, and its critical role in provoking positive social change, exemplified by the 2022 Fulcrum Festival: Deep Ocean/Deep Space. Produced with over a dozen partner organizations—including the Carnegie Observatories, LA Dance Project, LACMA Art and Technology Lab, Mt. Wilson Observatory, and UCLA Art|Sci Center—the festival showcased a robust lineup of exhibitions, performances, lectures, screenings, and workshops that reveled in the mysteries of the known universe.
Two major festival projects represent crowning achievements for our organization: freq_wave (Pacific; Los Angeles), a collaborative sound and light installation co-curated with Swedish artist CM von Hausswolff and installed in the 100-inch telescope at Mt. Wilson Observatory, and Lauren Bon and The Metabolic Studio: Bending the River, an ongoing infrastructural artwork that reimagines the relationship between Los Angeles and the river that brought it into existence, co-curated with Pitzer College Art Galleries.
In other exciting news, our transmedia publication, Sequencing, commissions artists and writers to develop genre-defying web-based projects. Via this platform, we recently launched Nina Sarnelle's The Erosion of Silicon Beach, an ambitious and sprawling conceptual research travelogue, which spans 19 chapters, 14 videos and more than three-hundred interactive hyperlinks.
The Emerge Fiscal Sponsorship program provides more than 80 L.A.-based artists and collectives with the necessary tools to create sustainable practices, while allowing them to remain independent, agile, and responsive to the shifting social and economic contexts in which they live and work. This year, Emerge artists raised over $1.8 million for creative development within our community!
In 2023, the Fulcrum Incubator residency program will welcome French artist Marie-Luce Nadal to work with Dr. Joshua Fisher at Chapman University in her continued development of wearable artwork that makes visible and accessible real-time data of lightning strikes around the globe.
And in October, Fulcrum Arts and the Los Angeles State Historic Park will co-present Procession, a multi-faceted civic activation, initiated by artist Debra Scacco and co-organized with artist Joel Garcia, which traces the geographic and cultural memory of Los Angeles through the legacy of the Los Angeles River (Paayme Paxaayt). In a dynamic series of events, Procession will invite the public to engage with the history of the ground beneath their feet and be active agents of change simply in caring for human and more than human systems.
To sustain our mission, we need your support. Your donation this year will allow these, and many more programs, to thrive and reach over 50,000 people with affordable, excellent arts experiences.
