George Mitchell Elementary School
Four years ago, our school had to be vacated when the roof collapsed, on the curtails of a horrendous winter storm. We were not able to salvage all of our PE equipment or bring it along to the new site. More recently, at our new site of the middle school, we suffered another loss, when a heating pipe burst, causing a lot of water damage to a fair amount of our equipment here. Most days, we are borrowing equipment from different programs in the school like Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and our Before and After School Enrichment program. This fundraiser will help us to replenish some the equipment that we have lost over the course of these two events.
A portion of the proceeds will go to Kaboom.org
Only one in four kids in the US are getting the recommended daily amount of physical activity. That means, in a class of 20 students, only 5 are truly able to be a kid for just one hour each day. Children are not playing at home, they are not playing in schools, and they are not playing in their communities.
Play is an equity issue, too. For the 14 million kids living in poverty, play is too hard to come by as their families face many obstacles to play; from a lack of safe places, under-resourced schools that cut recess and physical education, and too much screen time.
