Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women in India. One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, in India, every 4 minutes. One woman dies of Breast cancer, in India, every 8 minutes. An estimated 70,218 women died of breast cancer in India, for the year 2012, the highest in the world for that year.
One of the reasons for this calamity striking women in India is 'ignorance, taboo, economic dependence and culturally 'taken for granted gender'. Even educated women are not aware of the symptoms of this killer disease and most of the time, according to doctors that by the time woman affected by breast cancer seeks medical help, she is already in the third or final stage of her disease. It is taboo because women seldom speaks about this at their families and many women don't feel at home even to touch and examine her own breasts; feels shy and as if 'unwanted'. Even if a woman finds something unusual in her breasts, she usually keeps silence because her economic dependency is on her husband and fear of rejection keeps her suffer silently.
NewBeginnings is one of the few non-profit organisations in India spreading awareness among rural and urban women on breast cancer, self-examinations and makes sure when to meet a doctor. Also, we conduct medical camps at the rural villages targeting women. They are very shy but they want to learn when they come to know the killer disease.
We need to cover 171 villages in this year (2019) in Krishna district. Through this campaign we will be able to reach 102628 women and give awareness on breast cancer, self examination, and when to seek medical support. This campaign also involves in forming women support groups in each villages comprising of one health care worker and six women members to provide counselling, and support at the grassroots level.
