Abara 2020 Year-End Giving
2020: Looking Back and Moving Forward
Border Response: "They're receiving less money because of the pandemic. We’ve been asking for money to buy food and basic supplies. It takes $1,000 a week to make sure that all of the people Pastor Samuel delivers to receive the food they need. They’re doing their best with less. He’s out there every day and I help him however I can.” Support emergency food delivery and other border response work.
Education and Advocacy: "The sewing shop has allowed women to earn money to support their families. They've been making masks and tote bags. They even made fleece pajamas for some of the children in the other shelters. Because of the pandemic many of their cases have been delayed and right now it's almost impossible for migrants to find work. It's been a huge help. We also host ESL classes and legal aid information the workshop. There are so many opportunities. I'm really excited to see what we can do in this space." Support micro-enterprise projects and other education and advocacy work.
Collaboration: "Abara has been a vital partner in this work, assisting COESPO [Chihuahuan State Population Commission] and partner organizations through the provision of resources, volunteers, advocacy and the cultivation of international awareness and action. I fully and unequivocally endorse the work of Abara and their leadership and look forward to continuing to serve the border region’s most vulnerable with them, not only through the provision of emergency aid, but through the implementation of sustainable initiatives and social policy." Support international partnership building and other collaborative work.
Border Encounters: "Immigration is a complex and often politically charged issue, but immigrants themselves are people. Interacting with asylum seekers on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, and being inspired by the heroic responses of Christ-follwers on the ground, challenged and inspired me. I went home both better equipped to love immigrants in my community and to advocate for just and compassionate policies." Support border encounters and other peace-building work.
