MLK Day Prayer Breakfast Event - Donation
Freewill Offering to support the John R. Grubb YMCA Starfish Academy
The John R. Grubb YMCA is proud to carry on the tradition of hosting the 8th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Prayer Breakfast. This year's event will be virtual due to the ongoing global pandemic.
Because we are virtual, we look forward to reaching a wider audience for this year's event. The theme is focused on "Healing".
ARAG Legal and Nationwide Insurance are this year's leading Make-A-Difference corporate sponsors of the MLK Community Event. We wish to express our deepest gratitude for their collective support of this important event. Through the combined support of our sponsors, we are able to host this event virtually, and at no cost to our attendees. A Freewill Donation can be made to benefit youth attending the upcoming summer learning loss prevention program -AKA the Starfish Academy - at the John R. Grubb YMCA.
Dr. Martin Luther King desired equal opportunity for all. Through the work of the Y, we continue to lift up opportunities FOR ALL with a focus on youth development. Supporting a child to read at grade level, will support that child for a lifetime.

*ABOUT THE SUMMER LEARNING LOSS PREVENTION PROGRAM at the JOHN R. GRUBB YMCA
The summer learning loss prevention program, known as the Starfish Academy, is a program of the John R. Grubb YMCA that not only halts summer reading loss for over 200 low-income, minority, inner-city children but advances their reading skills by three-months. The Y currently operates this program at three sites with the support of our community partners. The Star Fish Academy cost $1,300 per student to attend the 6-week summer program. Certified teachers are hired to work with the students. Transportation is provided to all students, along with daily breakfast, lunch and healthy snacks. Enrichment programming of arts, swimming, fieldtrips, along with wrap-around care are also a part of this summer learning experience to support their academic learning, BUT it's all wrapped up in the feel of day camp.
As we enter the 8th summer of the Star Fish Academy, we know this type of program is needed in other parts of our city as well. However, it's vital that we first fully fund our current 3 sites. There is a funding gap of $150,000. Our capacity is to enroll 60 youth per site for the 6-week summer program. It takes a village to make this program happen. Thank you for considering becoming a part of our village.
