Support from our generous community is SewHope's lifeline. It funds all of our initiatives - education, medical, public health and more. Your donations this year are needed more then ever, and they WILL make a difference for SewHope. Thank you, for giving hope to the people of Peten Guatemala. Your support means the world to us!
What have we been doing since we met in March of 2020.... A LOT!!!
In Guatemala this past year, the pandemic devastated an already fragile economy. The country that already suffers from one of the highest rates of chronic malnutrition in the world was suddenly facing a new wave of desperation. White flags rose across the landscape, a symbol of hopelessness and surrender, as families resigned themselves to die of starvation, unable to provide food for their children, spouses, or selves. With your help, SewHope was able to provide food to over 1000 people who were on the brink of starvation. We continued to provide medical care to those in need and adapted to teach our students at home. We were able to be a light of hope, la luz de la esperanza, in an otherwise hopeless time.
On the brink of starvation in Spring of 2020, as COVID was raging around the world, many surrendered, raising the white flag to signify that they had reached starvation.
Your generosity helped us distribute food to over 1000 families just in one month.
With your support, we can continue to GIVE HOPE.
GIVE HOPE to our students. This past year, our education program served 95 students. That’s 95 children receiving nutritious, balanced meals each school day; learning the value of applied work through gardening and chicken-raising projects; acquiring not just academic skills, but life skills; and experiencing the love of God through their devoted teachers and SewHope staff. Students adapted to learning at home and our teachers worked around the clock to design new projects and assignments to accommodate this new learning environment.
GIVE HOPE to our education center. This year, we began construction on our new education center, creating a dedicated space to grow our education program and impact even more children in northern Guatemala. Beyond that, the construction provides local families with jobs, revenue for local companies, and some stability while the pandemic ravages Guatemalan economy. This project will be completed in summer of this year, and we will then need to fill it - with desks, chairs, computers - all the items that our children in the United States have will need to be purchased for our Guatemalan students!
