***BLM at School Teach-in Series!***
Together in the Struggle towards Ethnic Studies! A Panel including reps from Holyoke Ethnic Studies, the Fresno Ethnic Studies Coalition, Boston Public Schools Ethnic Studies, & Connecticut Hearing Youth Voices
Monday, Feb 1 6-8PM EST on Zoom
Come learn from the "Road Map" that other districts and states have paved in bringing Ethnic Studies to their own contexts. While each of our ways of bringing Ethnic Studies into our schools may have followed different paths, audience-participants at the session will leave with some concrete ideas for growing Ethnic Studies in their own schools/local contexts. Please send any questions that you have for our panelists to holyokeethnicstudies@gmail.com by January 29th. While we have built in some opportunities for real-time questions during the panel, we will be prioritizing questions for the Ethnic Studies panel that we receive in advance of the event.
Transformative+Restorative Justice: Youth-led Alternatives to Policing in Schools
Wednesday, Feb 3 6-8PM EST on Zoom
Pa'lante's youth leaders will share about the history of restorative + transformative justice and how they have implemented RJ/TJ practices at Holyoke High School. Following the Q&A, program leadership will be available to talk through specific questions from educators and youth organizers building similar programs. Pa’lante Restorative Justice is a youth led restorative and transformative justice program at Holyoke High School that is working to build youth power and dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. 6-7:30: Youth Led Presentation & Q&A; :30-8:00: Technical Assistance with Program Leadership to support other educators and youth organizers working to create similar programs.
This event series is part of the National Black Lives Matter Week of Action! Black Lives Matter in Schools is a movement for racial justice in education. It started in Seattle in 2016. Since then, districts and organizations across the country have participated in the annual Black Lives Matter in Schools Week of Action each February. The core demands of this movement are: 1) End Zero Tolerance Policies (and implement restorative justice) 2) Mandate Black History and Ethnic Studies 3) Hire More Black Teachers 4) Fund Counselors Not Cops. In Holyoke, MA, our high school is a national leader in implementing both #1 and #2! This series of events is designed to share with youth, educators, families and community members about these two programs and support others to fight for ethnic studies and restorative justice in their own contexts.
Events will take place on zoom. Registration is required.
