Youth Cultural Leadership Academy (YCLA) engages Palm Beach County youth in activities that encourage knowledge of self
and motivation to be leaders in their fields of interest. YCLA focuses on expanding career possibilities for young men and women of color
by making them aware of career possibilities, skill building and health and wellness activities.
Your donation of $100 or more includes an individual membership of the Spady Museum. ALL donations, time-talent-treasure, are gratefully welcome.

Spring 2021 Youth Cultural Leadership Activities July 19, 2021
March 18th the CDLA session facilitated by Mrs. West invited a guest
speaker Mrs. Samonia Broussard from Houston Community College to speak with the
girls via Zoom. Mrs. Samonia Broussard,
who currently works in the Financial Aid field and has over 20 years of
experience in college Financial Aid, spoke to the girls about the importance of
starting their financial aid search and applications early.
March 20th the CDLA had its first Retreat. The girls had a chance to do a 30-minute yoga
session outside under their own tent with their own yoga mat let by Sharon Blake.
They learned stress-reducing breathing techniques and stretches.
lunch, artist Nicole Escalara spoke to the girls on the importance of being
productive with their time, treating themselves as the Queens they are, and
most importantly taking care of themselves and their well-being. She later
guided the girls through an enthusiastic dance circle, where each of the girls
had a chance to express themselves through movement. After the dancing, the
girls expressed themselves by making vision boards on canvas.
Charlene Farrington wrapped up the day by presenting the girls
with 2 books of inspiration and the next title of the book-club called “One
crazy summer” by Rita Williams-Garcia. This book is one of several that
was donated specifically for Spady’s youth book-club by Dr. Robert Watson of
One of the girls shared, “It was just an amazing time. I needed
that. I truly needed time to just enjoy myself with my friends again,
socialize, and just be. I can’t wait to do this again” Another stated as she
let out a sigh of relaxation. The girls look forward to many more amazing
classes and days like this in the days to come.
