SPARC Poetry

Support SPARC poetry!
The flagship program of Bay Area Creative serves over 6,000 youth a year from kindergarten through high school in mostly BIPOC communities with spoken word and film-making workshops.

At SPARC we believe in the power of radical free speech to form outspoken communities committed to positive change. One of the ways we help to bring these communities together is by holding poetry slam events with students at school and in the community.
Other than working with students during the school day we also offer summer camps and after school clubs with scholarships so that anyone can join in the fun.

At each stage of growth, spoken word poetry can have a different benefit
Students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade play around with the elements of poetry in muraling, call and response, charades, acting, group poems, and a sometimes fearless ability to freestyle

4th and 5th grade students have the best of all worlds - the ability for abstract thought and a youthful perspective of some eternal truths the rest of us have forgotten
In junior high, spoken word can help with expressing emotions and empathizing with the changes in each other and the world around them.
Poetry workshops for high school students are customized to each class in order to respond to students’ relationships with culture and how their identities intersect with the best and worst parts of our society.

At the end of the day we want poetry to be a joyful journey in a world of words where we learn more about who we are, speak our truths and join with our communities to stand up for what we believe in!
