Desks for Distance is a movement started by Woodgrove High School Junior, Colby Samde, who combined his love of woodworking with a passion to help his peers in need. With COVID-19 causing online learning from home, Colby became frustrated working from his own dining room table which motivated him to then build his own custom desk.
Observing that many local students did not have resources to build their own desks, Colby so he took action. He created a grassroots effort in his hometown and enlisted the help of local businesses and volunteers. Within a month of launching his idea, 111 desks were built and distributed with more on the way. Colby was interviewed by local news outlets, Lester Holt, and Ellen further spreading inspiration and encouraging random acts of kindness around the world.
A desk is a crucial component to a child’s education. During this pandemic, every child needs a comfortable virtual classroom and homework space.
