La Casa Communitaria Ometepe, Nicaragua
Ometepe is a mystical island in Nicaragua with a strong agricultural tradition and an endless variety of fresh fruits and lush tropical forests. Nonetheless, in the rural communities here, there is a sense of hopelessness and a cycle of poverty perpetuated by rampant alcoholism, drug addiction, domestic abuse, teen pregnancies, and single parenting common in economically and educationally disadvantaged communities. Notably, 25% of girls between 15 and19 are mothers.
Nicaragua is a young country. People under thirty make up nearly 60%. Our vision is to inspire young people to dream again. To educate and empower youth to sculpt their future, to be aware of their impact, understand their strength in this world, and to support them to break unhealthy cycles and live their fullest life. We provide a safe place of support, creativity, and new ideas.
A commitment of $5/month by 20 people can fully support us to do our part to inspire youth to break the cycle of poverty handed down to them. *full budget below
Our mission is to identify natural leaders in the upcoming generation. Those who want to understand and cultivate themselves and their world; without hesitation, fear, or shame. Our role is to foster the self-esteem, self-care, and direct action needed for these youth to realize their dreams and to create a ripple effect for the future of Ometepe.
With a focus on quality over quantity, we have clearly identified 5 natural youth leaders in our community. These 5 trailblazers are mentored by our program coordinator Ali Tripp and support the expansion of our programming, inviting others to join our ongoing groups.
We currently host 2 weekly groups of language exchanges for all ages. Each week we also offer a group for adolescents focusing on building self-esteem and self-stewardship by creating trust in others and curiosity in self. In these groups, we present skills to support overall health with games, theater, discussions, arts, and movement. Additionally, we share two gardening days per week which build community, trust, and connection while developing skills for earth stewardship.
We are developing an arts and creativity group for primary school children to fortify the imagination so inherently alive in children. We’re also strengthening ties, and collaborating with the women of the Ometepe Mercadito to create the ‘Celebration of Sweetness’, a mini-festival where we will share dance and movement, and our local stakeholder will share and sell home-made candies and snacks.
