27 Steps

A member of Intersection for the Arts.

Our installation is titled 27 Steps, it is a pavilion for peace, visitors walk 27 steps, one for each year Mandela spent in prison. At night it becomes a stage for purple rain, to honor the event in which a police water cannon with purple dye was turned on thousands of anti-apartheid protestors. In the larger context, we see this as an opportunity to build this exhibit as a traveling pavilion. Our hope is offer this walk in other venues in America, Europe, Asia, and South Africa (Apartheid Museum). This is a prototype which we would like to further develop (in terms of the materials and means of construction) to have the strength and flexibility needed to live for more than a year.
