Help us elevate the voices of undervalued Black and Brown youth from across the United States
My name is Shawon Jackson, and I am the founder of Vocal Justice. Our mission is to empower Black and Brown high school students to become socially conscious leaders. We do this by engaging students in a culturally affirming public speaking program, where they build their confidence, communication skills, and critical consciousness. Ultimately, we want every student to be inspired and prepared to advocate for social justice using their authentic voice – wherever they choose to lead.
There’s nothing like seeing a shy 9th or 10th grader recognize the power of their voice. And it’s particularly special when they want to use that gift to bring our world closer to justice. Our students keep me hopeful at times when I would otherwise feel jaded.
We're raising money for our Vocal Justice Teacher Fellowship, which provides compensation and training to high school educators from across the U.S. to facilitate Vocal Justice at their schools. In spring 2021, we selected 15 teachers from 80+ applicants to be part of our inaugural fellowship. Fellows came from 10 states and D.C. The impact was remarkable, both on students and teachers. Students became more engaged in the classroom and opened up about their personal stories. Teachers felt heard and supported by connecting with like-minded educators who care about social justice and youth power.
I have no doubt that our students — individuals who have been silenced for far too long — can be the ones who make our world a more just, more liveable place for all. We need to invest in their potential, though. Any help you can provide will be much appreciated.
Thanks for your time <3
