Long Distance Release Flyathlon 2021
Bring the Flyathlon experience to your own backyard...
In response to the pandemic, the Running Rivers Board of Directors spent months locked away in our attics creating the Socially Distanced Flyathlon Challenge as the premier pandemic alternative to our traditional in-person Flyathlon events. The premise of this new challenge was extraordinarily simple. In short, we implored our Flyathletes to get outside, show off their backyards, and give back to their communities by completing tasks firmly in the spirit of traditional Flyathlon events. And boy, did they respond, as we raised more than $25K for coldwater conservation projects through this effort in 2020!
In 2021, our Board has decided to retain and expand this remote challenge as an alternative and/or addition to our in-person Flyathlon events. But we had to change that name, as frankly, who isn't sick and tired of hearing the phrase "socially distanced" at this point!
If you've been fly fishing long enough, you have undoubtedly hooked a monster trout, played it for a bit, only for the fish to spit the hook a good 30 feet away from your net. This age old scenario has been called many things. A "hook up". A "screw up". A "long distance release"...
How does the challenge work?
Between June 1st and September 30th, 2021, your mission is to accumulate as many points as possible doing things that you are likely to do anyway because you are Flyathletes. The more points you accrue, the more incentives you will earn, and the more chances you will have to win extraordinary gear donated by our amazing sponsors.
We also wanted to engage the whole family this year, and so we have created a Kids Long Distance Release Flyathlon so that they can get in on the action as well!
Wow, that sounds amazing! How do I earn points?
A Long Distance Release Flyathlon wouldn't be a Flyathlon at all without trail running, fly fishing, and craft beer (root beer for the kids). So, of course, we have designed several tasks around those core disciplines.
But as those of you who have truly embraced the spirit of the Flyathlon know, ours events are much, much more than multi-sport-parties held in remote and beautiful places.
Through six years of events, we have created an incredibly tight community of Flyathletes and sponsors, and in the process have made a significant difference for coldwater conservation, raising nearly a quarter of a million dollars for on-the-ground projects. As such, within the Long Distance Release Flyathlon, we have created several additional tasks that focus on helping our communities, taking care of our local waters, supporting our sponsors, and raising money for projects on our public lands and public waters. Additional information on all of the ways you (and your kids) will earn points is available on the next page.
While we sincerely hope to see you all at an in-person Flyathlon in 2021, we also look forward to seeing how you and your kids explore your own backyard and give back to your own community as a part of the 2021 Long Distance Release Flyathlon!
