Presented by LCCM and Lebanon Valley College
Lebanon County Christian Ministries and Lebanon Valley College are teaming up to provide a unique poverty simulation experience on Friday, Aug. 20 from 6-8:30 pm at Church of the Good Shepherd, 1500 Quentin Road, Lebanon.
The event is free! This event can accept a maximum of 40 participants!
The Community Action Poverty Simulation breaks down stereotypes by allowing participants to step into the real-life situations of others. Poverty is often portrayed as a stand-alone issue - but this simulation allows individuals to walk a month in the shoes of someone who is facing poverty and realize how complex and interconnected issues of poverty really are. Examples include:
• A single parent with limited resources and no transportation must find a way to get to work and get their child to daycare.
• An elderly person must find a way to pay for both utilities and medication.
• A young adult must care for siblings while their parent is incarcerated.
• An elderly couple must raise their grandchildren and deal with their own health and employment issues.
After the experience, individuals then have the opportunity to discuss what they’ve learned with their peers and the event facilitators.
You can register for the event here. If you register, but have to cancel, please email Andrea Gillhoolley at email@example.com

Participate in Hurdles to Housing
The poverty simulator is part of our larger fundraiser, Hurdles to Housing, which raises funds for our FRESH Start Emergency Shelter & Resource Center.
Homelessness is a reality for many individuals and families. But unless you've experienced it for yourself, it may be difficult to truly understand the complexity and pressures that come along with it.
That's why we've created Hurdles to Housing, a 30-day, team-based immersion experience designed to promote awareness, increase understanding, inspire local change, and transform perspectives about homelessness in Lebanon County. 'Hurdles to Housing' is not a game, but rather a self-guided challenge that we hope will lead to reflection on homelessness. All proceeds will benefit the LCCM FRESH Start Emergency Shelter & Resource Center, which provides homeless families and individuals the resources and training needed to empower personal sustainability while providing a safe place to sleep. FRESH Start is the only family-based shelter in Lebanon County that can accommodate any type of family, whether it be a single parent and children, married couples with children, couples, and even some individuals.
Hurdles to Housing will begin Wednesday, July 21, and end Friday, Aug. 20. Click here for details.
