Sickle Cell Warrior Walk Run 5K
Because Sickle Cell Awareness Matters!
"Because Sickle Cell Awareness Matters" — The Sickle Cell Warrior Walk/Run 5K is an inspiring, family-friendly event to unite the Nashville community in bringing awareness to sickle cell disease and creating long-lasting relationships to help support members of the sickle cell community. Sickle cell is an inherited blood condition that causes chronic pain, anemia, strokes, organ damage and even premature death. It can affect people of ANY race or ethnicity, but disproportionately affects African-Americans.
1 in 13 African-Americans carry the gene that causes sickle cell disease, and 1 out of every 365 African-American births results in sickle cell disease. Sickle cell also affects Hispanic-Americans from Central and South America and people of Middle Eastern, Asian, Indian, and Mediterranean descent. Millions of people with sickle cell trait do not know it, because many do not experience the same painful symptoms as people with sickle cell. This lack of information negatively impacts future generations because the sickle cell trait can be passed to their children and contributes to the persistence of sickle cell disease.
The mission of Breaking The SSickle Cell Cycle Foundation, a 501c(3) non-profit organization, is to promote awareness, education, and prevention of sickle cell within at-risk communities through education and service. Your paid registration helps the organization in conducting outreach efforts of educating community members to become empowered in "breaking the sickle cell cycle " and directly supporting sickle cell warrior families in the Nashville community and surrounding areas.
