Dunite Cultural Landscape Nomination
Help us add the Oceano Dunes to the CA Register of Historical Resources
The stunning sandscape of the Oceano Dunes was
the backdrop for some of California’s most influential 20th century
art and cultural movements. From the 1910s through the 1960s, the so-called
Dunites and their artistic collaborators came, searching for inspiration and solitude; they sent what they found
here back out to the world through their photography, painting, music,
literature, invention, and teachings.
Dune, Oceano. Brett Weston.
To protect the Dunes for future generations, we are nominating them as a Cultural Landscape to the California Register of Historical Resources. Once the Dunes are declared "eligible" for listing, they will enjoy significantly more legal protection. Projects that have the potential to impact the historic and aesthetic significance of the Dunes will be required to analyze and mitigate those impacts.
To complete the nomination process, we need to raise $3,000. Generous pledges have already gotten us partway to that goal, but we could use your help to reach the full amount! Because we are raising the funds through the Coastal Awakening, a project of Ecologists, your contribution is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
