Welcome to ABEN's 16th Annual Summer Institute (ASI), a 2-day online event, happening this June 14 - 15, 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.! This year's amazing line-up includes a Black Education Framing by the internationally-renowned scholars, Dr. Joyce King, on June 14 and Dr. Iva Carruthers, on June 15.
On June 14, Dr. J. Luke Wood, celebrated for his powerful Black Minds Matter courses that have reached thousands, will do a PowerTalk focused on "Race-lighting" which is a cousin to gas-lighting. Dr. Wood will be followed by one of the most brilliant "young" scholars inside and outside of the Academy. Her name is Dr. Bettina Love.
On June 15, one of the most important voices around developing the Black teacher pipeline, Sharif el Mekki, will deliver a Power Talk about his newest initiative. He will be followed by a keynote delivered by the inimitably brilliant Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz.
Each day will open with a libation by the mastermind of one of the most powerful gatherings of Black educators in recent history. Called Sisters in Education Circles, it is the brainchild of Dr. Akosua Lesesne. She created SIEC (pronounced SEEK) three years ago by inducting Elders like Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, Dr. Lisa Delpit and Dr. Joyce King, into this Sisterhood in order to help nurture other Black women educators coming up through the ranks.
After each keynoter, we will engage in what is called an Ndaba. It is a gathering place that some call a fireside chat where we sit and listen to our Elders in education, Drs King and Carruthers, respond to the earlier speakers.
At the end of each day, people who came as teams, will have 30 minutes to process what they learned that day and start thinking about how they can apply the new knowledge to their spheres on influence. Those not in teams can take a break and just think about the applying of the knowledge solo.
Finally, we will all come together for the last 15 minutes to hear from 2-3 teams and/or people before we end promptly at 1 p.m. PST/3 p.m./CST/4 p.m. EST.
Each of our past 15 summer institutes has been highly-acclaimed and most have sold out. Usually held on the Stanford University campus in partnership with its Graduate School of Education, last year's virtual one sold out even though the cost was $950 per person for three days at 6 hours per day!
To make it more affordable and limit Zoom fatigue, we have moved to 2 days and 4 1/2 hours per day and greatly reduced the cost to just $350 per person or $300 per person for teams of 5 or more.
Don't miss out on what will be another extraordinary institute. Register soon!
