What a Wild Spectacle! Janisse Ray and Bill Finch!
Authors and Explorers
Janisse Ray, author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, and Wildcard Quilt, has a new book, Wild Spectacle: Seeking Wonders in a World Beyond Humans, coming out in October! Wild Alabama is thrilled to be able to host her for this virtual event where Janisse will describe her life in south Georgia on a working farm, her writing process and tell us more about her upcoming book.
Janisse has won an American Book Award, Pushcart Prize, Southern Bookseller Awards, Southern Environmental Law Center Writing Awards, Nautilus Award, and Eisenberg Award, among others; and has been inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame. Her first book, Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, was a New York Times Notable Book. Her eighth book, Wild Spectacle, will be released Oct. 26, 2021. She lives and works inland from Savannah, Georgia.
In Wild Spectacle, Janisse repeatedly sets out to immerse herself in wildness, to be wild, and to learn what wildness can teach us. From overwintering with monarch butterflies in Mexico to counting birds in Belize, the stories in Wild Spectacle capture her luckiest moments—ones of heart-pounding amazement, discovery of romance, and moving toward living more wisely. In Janisse's worst moments she crosses boundaries to encounter danger and embrace sadness. Wild Spectacle explores our first home, the wild earth, and invites us to question its known and unknown beauties and curiosities.
Bill Finch is well known for his writing and conservation work. He and his wife Beth Maynor Finch now have the Finch Conservation organization and are working in the Paint Rock Valley of northern Alabama.
With his deep knowledge of natural history and ecosystems, Bill weaves solutions for complex and challenging projects with a long vision to the future. His consulting projects range from small conservation easements to corridor planning along the nation’s largest rivers. All are taken on with a deep love and enthusiasm for conservation possibilities.
Come join the fun! We will be able to enjoy the banter and have a conversation with these two friends who also love wild Places! You can ask questions of these wonderfully warm and open friends of Wild Alabama.
