Help Us Keep the Kitties Safe (and Clean!)
Can you believe that 'litterbox problems' are the primary reason cats are euthanized? That really stinks!
CCAS is a forever home for cats that are unable to find/stay in adoptive homes - often due to this reason.
I fell in love with Izzy, then learned that she has a congenital problem that resulted or contributed to three failed adoptions. No behavior problems, she just couldn't use a litterbox. The adopters knew that when they adopted her but she's just so cute and very sweet - who could resist? This girl knows how to get adopted!
Thankfully, the shelter where she was adopted took her back each time. They had decided to keep her there rather than put her through another adoption that may fail. I just had to have her.
Let's face it - NOBODY likes the smell of cat pee - including me! But I could not imagine little Izzy living in a shelter the rest of her life because she can't potty properly.
The shelter staff taught us how to help her potty and we adopted her ten years ago. She was doing so well we decided to help other cats with similar problems, hence Colorado Companion Animal Sanctuary was born.
Now 75% of the cats that live in the sanctuary (in the upper level of our house!) have litterbox problems aka incontinence. Most were going to be killed because of it. The majority have no other health problems and there are ways to help them potty. Once you get the hang of it, it is not a big deal. About 3-5 minutes a day.
"At CCAS, we don't think animals should die
because they can't use a litterbox."
My husband, Chris, and I are their caregivers. We help them potty 2-3 times a day, in addition to offering the best medical and comfort care available. They still leak and have accidents, so there is lots of cleaning involved. In order to make this doable, we protect them and their habitat with furniture and flooring that is potty-proof and liberal use of washable potty pads, waterproof pillowcases, etc.
I don't mean to whine or sound like a martyr - we chose this lifestyle. But - I do a lot of laundry - between 2- 6 loads daily. We have been using our personal washer/dryer but they are not the industrial type needed for this much use. The current setup is not sustainable so we are asking for your help to create a better solution.
