After receiving a note from our daughter’s school informing us of her exposure to COVID, it took about 2 days for my wife and daughter to begin to feel sick. When we received notification, we all took a rapid test, all were positive, and our PCR came back positive. By the end of the week, our entire family was ill.
COVID is real. I didn’t believe it until I experienced it firsthand and it’s no fun. For about two weeks our entire family was miserable as tried to get over being sick. My wife Beth and daughter Gracie were bad and looked like zombies. They could barely move for 14 days. Gracie lost her taste and still doesn’t have it back. She doesn’t like to eat now because she can’t taste anything. Beth lost her sense of smell and it’s just starting to return but only for potent scents. We were, however, fortunate not to get seriously ill like thousands of others.
I tried to press through the illness and continue to work. The whole family was bed ridden from day one except me. I tried to work for the first 4 days and ended up bed ridden for 10 days after that. Looking back, I should’ve rested and stayed home to ensure I could recover as quickly as possible. The fever, cold sweats, and nausea was suddenly real, and I couldn’t work it away.
"I am blessed because my entire family was sick, and we are all still here. There are so many people whose story is different. People who’ve lost loved ones to COVID and whose lives have been changed forever. Looking back, if there was one piece of advice I can give people, it would be 'self-care.'”
We have a responsibility to take care of ourselves, so our community is safe and well. By taking care of ourselves, we can ensure we are doing our part for a healthier community. Practicing good personal hygiene, remaining socially distance when in crowded areas or indoors, and wearing face masks when indoors are all easy things we can do to help.
