MILLION FATHERS MARCH (PHILADELPHIA)
WELCOME TO THE
2021 MILLION FATHERS MARCH
FROM HOUSE OF UMOJA TO OVERBROOK HS • #CODEBLUE I COME IN PEACE
For the past 14 years the House of Umoja has called on fathers to take a proactive role in their children’s education. This year, we once again ask that you join in by going to your own neighbor school and/or join us on Tuesday, August 31st at 7:30am to gather and prepare for the Philadelphia’s march on the 1400 block of Frazier Street (office at 5625 Master Street).
Fathers and Father figures register now at https://www.houseofumoja.net/MFM. Then sign-in onsite and receive your packet which includes your free “I Come In Peace” T-shirt. Line-up and the opening ceremony begin at 7:45am with libations as we acknowledge the ancestors and remember those children we have lost from violence. Hakim Starkey drums, street poet King Shyste will inspire, and we’ll come together in prayer for protection over and success for our children. Then, following in his grandfather’s, David Fattah’s footsteps, Anthony Bannister-Fattah leads the march.
We will march onto 5898 Lancaster Avenue, the site of Overbrook High School, and greet the students when we arrive. We’ll march along with a motorcade of horses, motorcycles, bikes, and cars for elders who may not be physically able to walk. The march will also be livestreamed from the House of Umoja’s website (Umoja TV).
With the collective skills of the community and collaborators, we feel that we all can help support our children, schools, and neighborhoods. Please join the planning meetings at the House of Umoja on Saturdays from 12noon until 1pm on August 7, 14, 21, and 28th.
School year 2021/2022 we theme as the Year of Intentional Peace where Fathers Read to Lead. Fathers, custodial and non-custodial, let’s engage in reading with children no matter their age. Also, we want to push for non-custodial and incarcerated fathers to engage in this exercise of bonding and learning. Register now as a volunteer and commit to the pledge. Even if you can not attend this march, you may still volunteer and commit to be active in your child or another child’s education.
