Pledge, donate, & play Birbgo to celebrate the birds at CCFS!
Have you ever visited SFBBO’s bird banding station at the Coyote Creek Field Station (CCFS), toured our mist nets, and seen birds up close and “in the hand?” Do you value long-term datasets that tell the story of Bay Area birds and help scientists from local universities and across the globe better understand how changes in habitat and climate may be impacting birds? Do you want students to have the chance to see biologists in action and explore science as a career?
Then we invite you to support our 2021 Band-a-Thon, a special campaign to raise money for our field station, an important science hub that has researched birds for 40 years. Here’s how:
Pledge Per Bird: To pledge to donate a certain amount per bird caught at CCFS from Sept. 18-Oct. 17, 2021, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call us (408) 946-6548 ext. 2. We will send you a final count on Thursday, Oct. 21 so you can calculate your final donation. Since 2003, captures during this period have ranged from 379 to 1026 birds. You can put a cap on the amount you give.
Lump Sum Donation: You can also make a straight lump sum donation to support the Band-a-Thon (please donate below). Donations can also be made by check to San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory, 524 Valley Way, Milpitas, CA 95035. Please include a note sharing what it is for. You can send an email to email@example.com letting us know you sent your check and we can send you your update and BirbGo card.
T-Shirt and Sticker: The Band-a-Thon is part of SFBBO's 40th Anniversary California Fall Challenge (CFC) fundraiser. A donation of $75 or more is eligible to receive our 2021 CFC T-Shirt, a beautiful multi-colored design this year created by artist Julie Ho that depicts 40 birds for 40 years. The estimated value of the t-shirt ($22) is not tax deductible. In addition, everyone who donates is also eligible to receive a 40th Anniversary CCFS Sticker!
Play Birbgo: This year, to celebrate our 40th Anniversary, in addition to the detailed weekly report we will send to to everyone who participates in the Band-a-Thon updating them about recent activity at the banding station, we have added a game called BirbGo to give participants the chance to celebrate our banders and learn about the birds we see at CCFS this time of year. This educational activity is also great for families!
Here are the rules:
- Everyone who donates or pledges to donate to the Band-a-Thon (any amount) is eligible to play the game and can receive one electronic game card
- Each week the Band-a-Thon team will send a clue (a bird's behavior, nickname, a photo of one small part of a bird) about one or more birds that were captured, studied, and released at CCFS that week and players can test themselves by guessing the bird and marking it on their card (if it is there), and answers will be given later that week
- The person who fills in the most spots on their card by the end of the Band-a-Thon wins bragging rights and will be announced in our newsletter and social media
The California Fall Challenge (CFC) is SFBBO's biggest annual fundraising campaign. Our goal for this year's 40th Anniversary CFC is to raise $40,000 to support our work throughout the year and we hope you will participate and help us reach our goal! Questions? Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
More fun California Fall Challenge events are scheduled for September and October including great guest speakers and in-person events. Please check them out! Thank you so much!
