- Explain the role of public health in the treatment of pediatric health care
- Discuss the importance of prenatal STD screenings and treatment in preventing pediatric infections
- Describe how early intervention rehabilitation services are used to assist children from birth to three years old with developmental and cognitive disabilities.
- Explore behavioral health and treatment options that are available to children diagnosed with mental health disorders
- Discuss the role of MAO’s HOPE Clinic Program in serving pregnant moms and babies who are living with HIV
- Discuss community approaches to address infant mortality in Alabama

- Provide an overview of public health disparities that impact pediatric health in Alabama
- List and describe pediatric immunizations that are used to prevent the spread of infectious and communicable diseases

- Provide a snapshot of babies born with disabilities in the United States and Alabama
- Discuss programs and services offered through ADRS Children’s Division.
- List and describe common cognitive and developmental issues impacting children from birth to three years old in Alabama
- Explain how early intervention services are used to assist children with special needs and their caregivers

Topic 1: Perspectives in Pediatric Mental Health (11 AM – 11:45 AM)
Presenter: Cynthia "Cindy" M. Jones, MA, LPC-S, NCC, Psychiatric Intake Response Center (PIRC) Director, Children's of Alabama
- Provide an overview of pediatric mental health cases in Alabama
- Identify and discuss common mental health disorders that are diagnosed from birth and early childhood
- Explain mental health treatment options that are available for pediatric patients
- List community resources that are available to assist health care providers, parents and caregivers of pediatric patients
Topic 2: A Social Service Perspective on Pediatric Patients with HIV – (11:45 AM - 12:15 PM)
Presenter: Jennifer Thompson, LICSW, PIP, PMH-C Director of Social Services, Medical Advocacy and Outreach
- Provide an overview of pediatric patients living with HIV in Alabama
- Discuss services offered through the MAO HOPE Clinic for pregnant and post partem moms
- Explain how to engage and link pregnant moms with HIV to MAO HOPE Clinic services
Topic 3: A Community Engagement Approach to Reducing Infant Mortality (12:15 PM - 12:45 PM)

- Provide an overview of infant mortality in Alabama
- Discuss community initiatives to assist moms and babies who are born with special needs
- Explain services that are available through the March of Dimes Foundation

Nurses: Medical Advocacy & Outreach is an approved continuing education provider of the Alabama Board of Nursing, ABNP 1554, exp. 10/24/2024. This activity has been approved for up to 4.25 contact hours for nurses.
