Herman’s Story: From Streets to Success

Please take a moment to watch this video, which tells some of Herman's story. Herman anticipates finishing his coursework in early 2022 to finalize his graduation requirements. He's overcome so much; more than any video can capture, and we're very proud of the man he has become.
Herman is a grateful and determined young man who makes the world a better place. But a pathway for him to find hope and flourish may never have been given.
So
much of the work of Raising Up Hope in Uganda, is literally that...raising
hope. RUHU casts a vision of a bright future for kids who could not
imagine that future for themselves. When the young girls at RUHU see
Jackie serving as the Head of the School or see Rachel leading as the head of
the Social Work Department, they can begin to imagine a future for themselves.
When the boys at RUHU who grew up without their own fathers see William care
for his wife and girls and hear him talk about how they, too, can have a future
as a loving father, they begin to catch a vision for a full and flourishing
life.
In Uganda, Covid-19 has resulted in an increased
rate of school dropouts, child workers, loss of morale and motivation for
school, increased prostitution, child marriages, child abuse, and crime. The
pandemic has muddied the future and made many of the kids at RUHU question
whether there really is a bright future for them. The scales were already
tipped against these kids. Now with even less certainty about the
future...what's the point? Amid all this uncertainty and adversity, RUHU began a mentorship program, they began hosting
workshops to educate the kids about negative consequences and “mindset
management”, they began a teacher coaching/tutoring program, they began
vocational skills classes such as basket weaving, book making, and sewing. They
are addressing the crisis of hope brought on by the pandemic. They are living
into their name Raising up Hope more than ever.
We are so encouraged by the endurance and hope on display in the RUHU family. They are bearing witness in the way they press on in difficult circumstances. They are ensuring that kids like Herman, have a bright future and that their dreams become a reality. By being a part of #GivingTuesday you also become a part of making this possible. Herman's story is a wonderful example of how being part of the RUHU family and educating an under-resourced child in Uganda can be life-changing.
