#StrongerTogether
YOU are essential to The We in Me
While homeLA returns to live performance in 2022 (we’re excited to see you!), we’d like to continue the inspirational work of The We in Me–homeLA’s education program that considers homelessness through the lens of interconnectedness, empathy, and civic engagement.
The We in Me programming was inspired by this statement released by the LA Mission in May 2021: “The homeless sector has spent millions of dollars on research but zero on educating the public on homelessness.” As an organization that centers notions of “home” as sites for cultural engagement and inquiry, we understand that a shift in social consciousness is needed to change how we see and relate to people experiencing homelessness to solve the problems that put them there. Embodying Empathy and Community Care Kits were education events that aimed to provide moments for us to connect to one another.
You can help us continue The We in Me in 2022!
Here’s what your support will do:
1. Underwrite programs like Embodying Empathy that connect artists, conversation, and performances together to broaden the public discourse about homelessness.
This year, Embodying Empathy:
Involved 20 Artists!
Showcased Performances: a dance film clip by Jay Carlon; a performance by Los Angeles Poverty Department, and a musical performance by Cubano Percussion.
Brought Compton City Assemblyman, Andre Spicer; Oasis Cannabis Executive, Mike Hurt; and Skid Row’s Church Without Walls founder, Pastor Cue in conversation with artists Corazón del Sol, Jay Carlon, and Bernard Brown.
2. Sponsor Community Care Kits in 2022–a family-oriented event that provides an opportunity for parents and their school-aged children to spend meaningful time together assembling hygiene kits for our neighbor’s experiencing homelessness.
This year, Community Care Kits:
Impacted 150 family members who came out to pack kits together
Provided 500+ Hygiene Kits for unhoused neighbors on Skid Row. We want to do more next year!
Was supported by $7000 of raised funds that purchase hygiene kits items. Each hygiene kit cost $12 to make. Hygiene Kits are personal toiletry items for health and wellbeing. Our hygiene kits will include items, such as: shampoo, conditioner, soap/body wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, hand lotion, socks, deodorant, Chapstick, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, face masks, comb, nail clippers, hand towels, first aid kit, Q-tips, plus a juice box and snack.
