Jen was promised a good job far from home that would feed and school her child while clearing her farmer's parents’ debts. She had never been outside rural northeast Thailand, much less all the way to America. But she couldn’t turn down this incredible offer. She followed the recruiters' instructions, got her passport, secured a visa, and packed her bags for Chicago. They would send someone to fly with her, not to worry. She didn’t have money to pay for the trip or the job (they charged $7,000 for the plane ticket and employment opportunity, which would take her to Texas and California too). So she signed an agreement that she’d pay them back in 6 months.
But when Jen (alias) arrived in America, the promised restaurant job turned out to be something horribly different: servicing 4 to 8 male clients a day with “sex massage”. She didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t speak much English. She didn’t have her passport or money. And she was told that if she did try to escape, she’ll be arrested for illegal immigration. She didn’t want her family to know what she was doing. She became deeply depressed and kept working as if she were a robot.
Thankfully, Jen was rescued through a law enforcement operation. She is safe, living under an assumed identity. Freeland is now looking for the other Jens still out there, and we’re on the hunt for the sex traffickers who lured her and continue to lure other victims into their cruel trap. Help us find the other Jens and put their slave masters out of business. Check out our record of success here.
