African American Tapestry
American Tapestry Series
Date: Mondays from June 6th-27th
Time: 6-9pm PST
Discover the deeper influences of the diverse cultures that are interwoven into the fabric of the American Tapestry of today’s United States of America. Through presentations of food, videos, readings, and discussions; this interactive educational series will seek to provide a flavor of experiences of each cultural thread, and then discuss how they continue to be positive strengths and influences in modern American society.
We started with the original inhabitants of North America, the Native Americans/American Indians. And we continue to add in other cultures in the same way that they were introduced and incorporated into the evolution of the United States. The intention of this series is to gain an appreciation for the many contributions that multiple cultures have made to America so that we can have a meaningful understanding of what American culture is and what that means for the future of its people. We want to encourage inclusion and a celebration of the differences as a source of strength, that will enable a mutual respect and admiration that unites us all as one nation.
This course is orchestrated to gain an understanding of the role and contributions of African Americans to the growth and development of the United States. We will examine the historical significance of African Americans from African Origins to Present Day through untold stories and the art of storytelling. Throughout the course, we will have discussions and experience African American foods and artwork over the years. We will leave the course realizing the experiences and celebrating the successes of African Americans.
