Life is mystery, all of it. There is nothing that is not mystery.
And somehow we humans are the sentient beings with a profound desire to probe mystery. Sometimes we do this to understand and explain. We explain the world to ourselves, naming and figuring how a particular thing works and how to fix it. And we explain ourselves to ourselves, finding reasons for our own behavior, the behavior of others and for whatever may befall. We do this, and we do it again, again and again, but with all our understanding and explanation there we are, as always, left at the threshold of mystery—what we do not know, the uncertainty of life. We discover that despite what we may think, we are always at home here.
Another way into the mystery of things is to let go into the moment, allowing life to come to us, allowing for surprise and appreciation to meet us in the flower, in our friend, in the thoughts and feelings that arise. In other words, we can just let the mystery be and in doing that discover our heart’s true home.
The meditation path is a path to inhabit your life, to be at home in the mystery. That’s what we will be doing on retreat.
