Lauren Singer-2022 Open Heart Mission
Let's Save Some Lives Together!
In the summer of 2019, just a few weeks after my high school graduation, I had the opportunity to join the VOOM foundation on a mission to Nigeria and in May I am headed back for my 3rd mission.
At the time I had my college career pointing vaguely in the direction of health care. Over the course of our week at the Enugu teaching hospital, I learned more about myself than I had in 18 years. In that week I got to personally know all the patients as well as other VOOM team members. Everyday a growing excitement to be in the hospital and in the operating room swelled inside me. It was in that week when I fell in love with medicine.
When we came home from Nigeria, I changed my major to pre-med and enrolled in a nursing assistant program to work in the hospital. Now, I have been working in the pediatrics unit for over two year's and I love what I do. My patients drive me to continue chasing that passion that started in a Nigerian operating room.
