Get Kids Outside
Bringing the Wonder and Awe of Nature to Children
Today's children are connected to electronic devices more than ever. That pandemic has pushed learning online and kids have had to adjust to screens. Get Kids Outside provides a solution to this problem by offering fun and engaging outdoor activities that educate our youth about the outdoors and inspires them to want to choose the outdoors over a screen. Since 2016, Get Kids Outside has been offering engaging and educational outdoor activities to children in the Madison area. We serve children at community centers, non-profits, and African American churches. Our signature event is an annual Firefly Hike at Indian Lake County Park. Held each summer, this event draws up to 80 people to enjoy a summer evening and to learn about and experience the wonder and awe of fireflies. Children learn about how fireflies work and get to chase them across the prairie, capturing them in jars to watch them light up like Christmas trees. They also get to make a s'more over a fire. Other events include our annual fall outing where we learn about the natural world and take a hike, a winter snowshoeing and sledding event and a spring hike. More events will be scheduled as funding permits.
