Wi Yone Plastik

Currently, there is no waste management infrastructure in rural Sierra Leone. As a result, all household waste is burned in backyard trash fires, including plastic. Wi Yone Plastik implements community level, female-run plastic collection services that work in conjunction with local recycling centers to convert plastic waste into building materials like bricks and tiles. These products can then be sold for a profit and the money can be reinvested in women’s organizations within the communities we work in. We also partner with existing community groups like school, churches, mosques, and hospitals to create culturally specific education programming encouraging plastic recycling and other health and hygiene best practices.
