Harriet Tubman statue for South Bend
a beautiful public tribute to this courageous hero
South Bend has a once in a lifetime opportunity to have a bronze statue of Harriet Tubman, the courageous and formidable leader of the Underground Railroad, permanently placed in a central and public location in the city. The sculptor is Gary Lee Price https://garyleeprice.com.
There is historical precedence that such a statue belongs in South Bend. The Levi Coffin House in Fountain City, IN was known as Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad. It is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. Nearby, Vandalia, MI served as a juncture of two Underground Railroads. And here in South Bend, at the old courthouse, Blacks and Whites gathered together to protect, and ultimately, help free a Black family escaping from slavery in Kentucky.
