Arrive early to get a free T-shirt and bandana while supplies last!

10:00 - walk begins!

- Where? -

Our "hike" will commence at the corner of W 19th Street and Heights Blvd! Our southward walk will proceed down the tree-covered trail of Heights Blvd, and we'll make a loop to finish our walk right where we started. Come join friends and neighbors to learn about the symptoms of ovarian cancer and how you can become an advocate by simply wearing a shirt! The shirts have the symptoms of ovarian cancer on the back. Anytime you wear it, you become a "human billboard" and help to educate others.

St. Andrews Episcopal Church is graciously allowing participants to use their parking lot!

We will gather after the walk for further fun and some raffles. Heights Bier Garten is setting aside an area just for us to gather.

We are working on finding someone to sponsor our “first round of socializing” otherwise everyone will cover their own food/drinks.

This year, over 21,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and about 14,000 women will die from it. Sadly, there is not a screening or early detection test available. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are subtle and often overlooked, which results in only 20 percent of ovarian tumors being detected before they have progressed to an advanced stage.

Every year, women of all ages are affected by ovarian cancer, especially the rare form low-grade serous ovarian cancer (which disproportionately affects younger women). The lack of screening tests and limited research for ovarian cancer adds to the importance of not only educating women about the symptoms of ovarian cancer, but the need to raise funding for research in order to help give these women better treatment options and longer lives.

STAAR Ovarian Cancer Foundation has created the Step Up America for Ovarian Cancer Campaign to raise awareness and funding for research, especially for the rare subtype, Low-Grade Serous Carcinoma (LGSC). Funds raised will be directly supporting ovarian cancer research. STAAR is governed and run 100% by a volunteer board and committee members, half of whom are women previously diagnosed with LGSC. Since 2020, STAAR has provided funds for two research projects at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, with the most recent contribution totaling $150,000!

Guest of Honor: Nicole Andrews

Heights resident and Board Chair of the STAAR Ovarian Cancer National Foundation, Nicole Andrews, will be joining us to share information about recent studies STAAR has supported and how YOU can help educate others about ovarian cancer. Nicole was an associate professor at the University of Houston until diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2020. She now dedicates her time to educating the public about ovarian cancer, and she has worked tirelessly to encourage the creation of awareness and education events across the nation.
