What does TLC do and why is this work important?

Texas Lawyers for Children (TLC), which is a program of the  Child Protection Connection™, works to improve case outcomes for abused and neglected children by enhancing the quality of legal services they receive, by raising public awareness, and by facilitating improvement in systems that serve children and families. The most important decisions about an abused and neglected child's future are made in the court. TLC exists to help ensure that those decisions lead to healing, instead of harm, while children are in the Texas foster care system.

Every year, 45,000 Texas children face one of the most traumatic chapters of their lives -- they are removed from home due to abuse or neglect and placed in foster care. The Texas foster care system is severely broken. Although there are many wonderful foster parents, a federal judge concluded that "rape, abuse, psychotropic medication, and instability are the norm" for Texas foster care children and that they leave foster care "more damaged than when they entered." The Child Protection Connection and its program Texas Lawyers for Children protect children by focusing on the professionals who have the greatest power to take action for these children -- the judges and attorneys who act as lifelines and ensure these children remain safe. We prevent further harm by connecting, equipping, and mobilizing a network of over 3,400 judges and attorneys, who estimate they serve over 100,000 abused and neglected Texas children each year.
