The Restorative Teaching Series introduces the foundational concepts of Restorative Justice in Education (RJE) and explores practical strategies to apply these concepts in classrooms and schools.
Each day includes one hour of independent work along with 2-hr live Zoom sessions in the morning and afternoon. Information on independent work will be sent out the week before the training begins.

About the schedule: In an effort to effectively structure training during the summer, we are scheduling two modules a day for three days straight. Each module is "three hours" in credit, however only two hours are completed synchronously. The other hour is pre-session work completed independently. The Zoom sessions are interactive and participatory, so recordings will not be available. Certificates for completion of up to 18 hours of professional development can be provided upon request.
FULL WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Introduction to Restorative Justice in Education (RJE): Restorative practitioners know that restorative justice is more than a program or list of strategies: it’s a paradigm shift. But what does this shift look like in an educational setting? This course will introduce and explore this new/old way of considering our values about relationships, discipline, and community in school settings.
Grounding RJE in Trauma-Informed Understanding: Restorative practices are not inherently trauma-informed, so without a deeper understanding of trauma, practitioners could be doing more harm than good. Developed in collaboration with author and trauma-specialist Alex Shevrin Venet (Unconditional Learning), this module will introduce basics of trauma and trauma-informed practices, while exploring the confluences and tensions between the two fields.
Saturating RJE with Equity: Without an active and persistent examination of inequities, restorative practices will not fulfill its transformative intentions. While many educators and schools find RJE as a solution to inequity, any RJ initiative will disappoint if we do not take a look at the harms caused due to systemic and structural oppression. This module will provide a space for educators to foster this lens of equity, so they can apply it with their restorative mindset.
Restorative Language: Once we have a restorative mindset rooted, one of the primary ways we represent this language is with our words. Participants will learn and practice the traditional RJ concept of Affective Language, while exploring overlaps with nonviolent communication (NVC) and other communication styles through a RESTIQUITY (restorative-trauma-equity) lens.
Circles for Community Building: Learn the basic steps of the circle process and how you can use circles with your students. Participants will investigate the key features of a successful Circle and learn how to design their own classroom Circle to build connection and community with their students. Tips for hosting virtual Circles will be included. Participants should already have a basic, introductory understanding of restorative justice before attending this workshop, with training in equity and trauma-informed practices highly recommended.
- Cancellations received 30+ days prior to the first day of the training are eligible for a refund, less a $25 cancellation fee.
- Cancellations received between 10-30 days prior are eligible for a 50% refund.
- Cancellations received less than 10 days prior are not eligible for a refund.
- If TriadRJ cancels this workshop, all registered participants will be entitled to a refund of all fees paid.
- If a participant is not present for a workshop (“no show”) for any reason, they will not be entitled to a refund.
