Azure McCall
Live on June 12th at the TAC JAZZ FEST!
Join us to see Azure McCall at the TAC JAZZ FEST, June 12th at 5pm! This show will feature Tammy Lynne Hall on piano, Ron Belcher on bass, and Jeff Minnieweather on drums.
Azure McCall, Hawaii’s First Lady of Jazz, is a multi-award winning vocalist. She is heir to the vocal tradition of Sarah Vaughn, Carmen Mcrae and Ella Fitzgerald. After releasing her first CD, she was asked by the great bassist Ray Brown to be his vocalist on tour along with Geoff Keezer, Kareem Riggins, Joe Lovano, and Nicholas Payton. Soon after, Azure became the first singer for The Freddie Hubbard Band. Azure was asked by Dizzy Gillespie to join him at what turned out to be his last performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival, and in 2008 was asked by President Barack Obama to perform at his pre-election party.
Azure has recorded three CDs: “Body and Soul" and “Harlem Nocturne” with Tennyson Stephen and Jim Howard on piano, Jess Gopen on drums, and Bruce Hamada on bass; and "The Gift", adding drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Alphonso Johnson, and guitarist Phil Upchurch.
The TAC JAZZ FEST is an ongoing festival at the Temescal Art Center (511 48th St, Oakland, CA) presented by Jazz in the Neighborhood.
