The Venice Heritage Foundation is providing fiscal sponsorship for Venice collective, THE NONSEMBLE, for the very first full-scale "Jazz Festival" in Venice, CA
Jason Sugars, co-founder and artistic director of THE NONSEMBLE is also a fourth generation Venice native. Growing up in his family shop on West Washington Blvd., the young music lover was lucky enough to have spent a good amount of time two blocks down the road at the local ad hoc Jazz spot.
The AZZ IZZ JAZZ CLUB CULTURAL CENTER AND TEAHOUSE was the full name of the club and the non-profit behind it. Both were run by Sax player, Billie Harris out of a small house on the street now known as Abbot Kinney Blvd.
Though the club is long closed [1970 - 1978], many in Venice have never forgotten the look and feel that drew locals and jazz enthusiasts from all across the L.A. area.
The little kid that grew up in and around the club remembers as well as many. Jason still lives here in Venice, is active locally and around the world and is now working to bring those memories of the AZZ IZZ JAZZ CLUB to life.
The result of that wish, THE NONSEMBLE'S [ ]AZZ-IS VENICE Jazz/Not-Jazz Festival! Takes its name and spirit from the original AZZ IZZ in Venice, CA.
Every major metropolis and most second cities in the world present at least one Jazz festival each year… welcome to the latest!
Taking place in the park at Venice Beach Recreation Center on SUN.06.NOV at 12P, this festival will feature multiple live stages filled with live players from the new, now and next generation of Los Angeles Jazz Lions, as well as DJ set ups for the dancers and roller disco folks and a spirits and libations garden to get the vibe right.
The Venice Heritage Museum team is collaborating with THE NONSEMBLE on an ongoing project that will include an oral history of the original AZZ IZZ, based on a panel of the club's original player partners and an exhibit created to share the tribal vibe of this legendary piece of Venice history!
Donations made here will benefit the festival, the AZZ IZZ JAZZ project and the Venice Heritage Museum, working as Fiscal Sponsor for the [ ]AZZ-IS Jazz/Not-Jazz Festival!
We thank you for your support and invite you and your family to join us at this open-air, free and family-friendly event!
