AL NAGASAKO KAULIKE FUND
Giving students a fair chance to thrive and succeed
"If you think it's good for kids, go for it!" - Al Nagasako
MLC established the Al Nagasako
Kaulike Fund in honor of the late Al Nagasako. He was Kapolei High School’s
(KHS) first principal and a founding MLC board member who served 38 years as a
public school principal, vice principal, Leeward District Superintendent, and teacher. He also served as Executive Director of the Hawai`i State Teachers Association.*
Al was a passionate
advocate for students, especially those who struggled financially or
academically. “Al was a fighter for the underdog and always believed that
everyone should have a fair chance to thrive and succeed regardless of their
financial circumstances,” said Elden Esmeralda, MLC Board President and
former KHS principal who was mentored by Al. "Al was one of the strongest forces behind the creation of our organization. If not for him, I can honestly say that MLC would not exist," said Pauline Sato, co-founder and Executive Director.
This Fund is aptly named “kaulike,”
which can mean “fairness” or “equitable.” It honors Al’s values by helping West
Oʻahu public schools provide field trips to MLC’s Ola Nā Kini ecosystem
restoration projects that they may find difficult to afford. Fees such as buses, substitute teachers, supplies, and programming add up quickly. Al wanted students
to have these hands-on, project-based learning experiences beyond
the classroom.
