Amelia Burke - Open Heart Surgery Mission
Providing Children in Nigeria Access to Cardiac Care!
Hello Friends, Family and Colleagues,
This November I will be headed to my first pediatric open-heart medical mission in Nigeria. I have been invited by the VOOM Foundation to help address the lack of pediatric surgery within the country. Our team will be comprised of my colleagues from New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital who will volunteer their time to train and educate the local Nigerian staff while serving indigent children that have absolutely no option. I have been a pediatric cardiac surgery nurse practitioner for nearly 5 years. Throughout my nursing career I have fostered a genuine passion for taking care of patients and their families. There is no greater joy than seeing health and happiness restored in these children.
Nigeria has a population of over 200M and almost 50% of the country is living in poverty and cannot afford the cost of surgery, nor do they have the funds to travel out of the country for treatment. This leaves the majority of children with heart disease extremely vulnerable. Our goal is to transfer skills and provide training to build Nigeria's first sustainable open-heart program.
I am truly looking forward to this opportunity to use my skills to make a difference and serve in another part of the world. All donated funds will directly support the mission. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support!
