On Sunday February 26th starting at 1:00pm, Capoeira Social Project will be offering a workshop on Coco de Praia or Coco Praiana, a percussion rhythm and dance from Olinda, Pernambuco, Brazil.
Coco de Praia is an afro-indigenous celebration from coastal beach towns like Recife, PE. CSP is the only organization in the Mid-Atlantic and east coast who offers these teachings and we are excited to spread our knowledge. Many stories of the roots of the art form will be discussed in the workshop, from its potential creation in the countryside it its roots in fishing villages. We will clap, stomp, and sing so be ready to move, have fun, and learn a little bit of Portuguese.
This workshop will begin at 1pm and last roughly 2 hours...but once the dance party starts who knows when it will stop. ;-)
(but if participants have any please feel free to bring them along)
Here is a video of some of our friends in Coco da Gente demonstrating a little of the dance and three of the instruments we will be jamming on.
