When schools tout high levels of student engagement, exactly what do they mean? Can (and should) understandings of student engagement be the same across different grade levels and disciplines? Given the prevalence of this term in educational literature, it is time for us, as educators, to deepen our understanding of the construct of student engagement in order to better understand the experiences of the learners in front of us. The student engagement summit will provide educators the opportunity to explore their own conceptions of student engagement while investigating and applying elements of the research literature surrounding student engagement. This interactive experience will empower educators with a more detailed and nuanced understanding of what it means to create student engagement and the strategies to try and measure this critical construct. Lastly, participants will consider, practice, and discuss different instructional practices the research has shown to increase levels of certain types of student engagement. Regardless of whether you work in primary, middle, secondary, or post-secondary schools, I invite you to attend the Engagement Summit, where you will be called upon to:
- Consider your own conceptions of student engagement and those of colleagues from a variety of different educational environments,
- Work with the literature surrounding different student engagement constructs being explored in educational literature, and
- Practice teaching with actual students and gain experience using validated, tried, and true student engagement measurement instruments to measure the degree to which you thought you did accomplish what you hoped to accomplish.
Early bird registration closes on January 31. Please reach out to me at [email protected] with questions or inquiries.
