The mission of Reston Stars is to increase access for economically disadvantaged Reston youth to participate in performing arts enrichment programs. Although there are local performance programs available at no or low cost, these opportunities are limited, especially for performing arts camps. Excellent programs exist, but their tuition is expensive for many families, which reinforces inequities in the arts. Students from less privileged families shouldn’t have to miss out on this performing arts exposure, which can inspire and prepare students for higher levels of skill and performance. These important experiences should be available to all demographics of students, no matter how much money their families have.
Reston Stars was founded by rising South Lakes Senior August Rivers as part of his IB CAS project, with the support of his co-founders, rising Junior Itsuko Scoville and rising Sophomore Liam Birch. Reston Stars is a charity project led by South Lakes students through the CORE Foundation, a Reston 501(c)(3) non-profit. All donations will go to the CORE Foundation and will be spent on Reston Stars scholarships for low-income students to participate in performing arts programs.
