The Shaw Community Center’s signature afterschool program
has a long history of helping Shaw youth surpass academic expectations and this
past school year was no exception. Nora McGinn, 4th/5th
grade reading teacher at Cleveland Elementary School, reported that 90% of the
Center’s students exceeded their end-of-year reading goals and 70% are reading
now on their current grade level. Two students made over 2 years of reading
growth in just one year! This is no small feat given the devastating
decline in academic achievement caused by the pandemic.
With literacy support being a large component of both our
afterschool and summer camp programs, our students are poised to start the
’23-’24 school year with a strong foundation. But we need your help to
ensure we have the supplies, equipment and activities to provide them with
high-quality enrichment that helps them succeed across the board.
