We at the Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County (HCTC) hope this letter finds you well. Today, we appeal to you as part of our effort to continue our Family Meal Kit distribution program. Each Monday from August through May, HCTC delivers Meal Kits to 55 families in need in our community. Each Kit contains everything necessary to prepare a plant-based nutritious meal for a family of four. The Meal Kits are assembled by student volunteers at Davidson River School, and then delivered to local non-profit after-school programs for distribution to their client families.


Since the summer of 2021, the HCTC Family Meal Kit program has provided over 24,000 meals costing less than $3 each to Transylvania County residents through innovative start-up funding from the Dogwood Health Trust. Unfortunately, Dogwood funding is no longer available, and our numerous efforts to secure other grant funds both locally and nationally have so far been unsuccessful. Without your help and funding, HCTC will not be able to continue to deliver weekly Meal Kits to deserving Transylvania County families this school year.


Our client surveys show overwhelming appreciation of the Meal Kits from the families and agencies we serve, including SAFE, Sharing House, El Centro, The Haven Family House, Boys and Girls Club, Rise and Shine, and The Family Place. Survey responses included, “They are tasty, and I can involve my kids in preparing good food while providing this single mom stress reduction and time for other chores”, and “Please keep the kits coming.”


Meal Kits are making a difference in the lives of families in our community. To continue providing the current level of the Family Meal Kits for the coming school year, $25,000 is required.
