Toby's Foundation supports families (parents, siblings, grandparents, and extended family) grieving the loss of an infant, educates them on the importance of Safe Sleep Practices, and promotes SIDS awareness across the United States. The 501(c)3 was created in 2017 in memory of Tobias Stern, who died at 12 weeks old from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. His parents, Daniel and Katie Stern, formed the non-profit to keep Toby’s memory alive and be a resource for other families who go through a similar loss.
Toby’s Foundation will offer long weekend retreats that provide professional counseling, art therapy, memorial remembrance activities, yoga and breathwork, outdoor activities, and other therapeutic and wellness experiences to help parents, siblings, and families.
The intent of this facility is to provide a place for grieving parents at any stage in their journey. Grief has no timeline, and everyone grieves differently. Creating a space where mothers, fathers, and families can come together and grieve together is the mission of Toby’s Foundation. This facility will serve families, not only locally in Western Pennsylvania but from across the country, providing tools to help deal with grief daily and hope for their future.
The project is expected to cost $6M to build. The Monroeville-based non-profit worked with NEXT Architecture on the design. It is the intent to have built or purchased a piece of real estate by 2027 for Toby's Foundation to operate out of and the Grief Retreat Center to be open for families during that time.
